No. 1 Squadron is the oldest squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force. It was formed in January 1916, in the First World War it operated over Palestine, in the Second it flew Beaufighters in the Pacific, in the 1960s it took Canberras over Vietnam, and from the 1970s it operated F-111C bombers for long decades. When Australia retired that type in 2010, the squadron moved onto the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet and stayed at Amberley air base in Queensland.
The centenary fell in 2016 and the unit marked it with a ceremonially finished aircraft. The Super Hornet with serial number A44-210 received commemorative artwork on its vertical tails, where references to a whole century of service came together. Australian squadrons normally carry a finish like that for a single display season and it comes off at the next scheduled work, so it is a short-lived state of a single airframe number.
The area under large artwork should be sprayed to a gloss. A matte surface traps air under the carrier film and the edges then stay visible even after a clear coat. Lay the large tail motifs down one at a time and with plenty of water under the decal, so that they can still be aligned to the axis.
The subject is the two-seat variant of the Super Hornet, and the kit has to be chosen accordingly. Australian aircraft differ from American ones only in details of their equipment; the main difference is made by the decoration itself. The tails of the Super Hornet are large in area, so the anniversary artwork shows well even after drying and a clear coat.
