About product

Turned barrel for the 88 mm PaK 43/1 L/71 for the Sd.Kfz. 164, 1:48, Aber

An accessory from the Polish manufacturer Aber from its range of turned barrels. The metal part machined on a lathe replaces the plastic barrel from the base kit: it has a precise round cross section, a cleanly cut muzzle and no lengthwise parting seam left by the mold. In 1:48 scale the barrel is long and very slender, so even a small warp of a plastic part is immediately visible on a finished model. This is a part for a kit, not a model of the vehicle.

The real subject

Behind the designation Sd.Kfz. 164 stands the German self-propelled anti-tank gun known as the Nashorn, earlier the Hornisse. It came about on a chassis derived from the Panzer III and IV tanks and carried in an open superstructure the long gun of 88 mm caliber PaK 43/1 L/71, that is one of the most effective anti-tank weapons of its day. The vehicle was deployed from 1943 and its weakness was the lightly armored open fighting superstructure, which protected the crew only against splinters. It is precisely the conspicuously long barrel that gives the whole vehicle its characteristic silhouette.

Building and painting tips

Degrease the metal part with alcohol or mineral spirits, otherwise the paint will not hold. Carefully adjust the hole in the mantlet with a round file, so that the barrel sits without pressure and does not droop. It is glued with a thicker cyanoacrylate glue or with two-part epoxy; ordinary cement for plastic does not work on metal. Apply a primer for metal before painting, and only then the base shade. With a barrel this long, see to it that it stays on the axis while drying, ideally by laying the model down so that nothing presses on it. Darken the muzzle and the muzzle brake and dust them lightly with soot.

Who the part is for

  • Modelers who build German vehicles in the less usual 1:48 scale
  • Builders of self-propelled anti-tank vehicles of the Second World War
  • Those bothered by the parting seam and the slight ovality of a plastic barrel
  • More experienced modelers used to metal parts and cyanoacrylate glue

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the German self-propelled anti-tank gun Nashorn, earlier designated the Hornisse, built on a chassis derived from the Panzer III and IV tanks.

No, it is only the turned barrel as a replacement part. The base kit of the vehicle has to be obtained separately.

Dry-fit the hole in the mantlet first and widen it with a file if need be. Glue with cyanoacrylate and let it dry in a position where nothing presses on the barrel.

It is less widespread than 1:35, but it has its own steady circle of builders and accessories are routinely made for it, turned barrels among them.
