Cut-outs for spraying the canopy frames of the Gloster Gladiator Mk.I biplane, 1:48 scale. They are applied outside and inside, and a pair of insignia masks is enclosed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Gladiator was the last biplane fighter of the Royal Air Force and at the same time its first fighter with an enclosed sliding canopy. That combination sounds almost contradictory: the struts, the rigging wires and the open lower wing surface belong to the previous era, the canopy over the pilot already to the following one. That is why the cockpit draws attention on a model and it is worth doing properly.
The sliding section consists of several narrow panes separated by frames and the windscreen has a division of its own. Outlining that many edges by hand is hours of work and one imprecise stroke is enough to spoil the whole impression. The set offers two complete sets of cut-outs, for the outside and for the inner side, so the frames look equally good from both viewpoints.
It flew over Norway, in France, over Greece, and became best known in the defense of Malta. Finnish, Belgian and Chinese crews flew it as well, so the choice of finishes is wide and more than one build can be devised for the two enclosed marking masks.
On a biplane the size matters more than on single-wing machines, because all the small detail ends up being twice as visible. In the chosen size it is still reasonably possible to work with thin sections and rigging wires, while the model does not take up as much shelf space as the larger variants.
No paints and no plastic parts; this is purely about masking. The struts and rigging wires are better left until the masks have come off, otherwise you catch on them while working.
