About product

Life raft for the F4F-3 Wildcat, 1:48 (Eduard)

A small add-on set in 3D-printed resin that adds an inflatable life raft to a Wildcat model. It is not an aircraft kit but a detail of the kind that injection-molded models usually leave aside. It works in two ways: stowed in its compartment behind the cockpit on a model in takeoff configuration, or laid out beside the aircraft as part of a diorama that tells the story of a forced landing on the water. The maker is the Czech company Eduard.

The real subject

Carrier fighters operating over the open sea carried emergency equipment for survival on the water as standard. The Wildcat, which formed the backbone of the US Navy fighter force at the start of the fighting in the Pacific, carried an inflatable raft stowed in the fuselage behind the pilot's compartment. The F4F-3 version was an early variant with fixed wings and a radial engine, on which this kind of equipment commonly appeared.

Building and painting tips

Wash the part in lukewarm water with dish soap so that the paint holds. Cut the print supports off with a sharp knife and sand the surface gently, ideally with your airways protected. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; cement for plastic does not work here. After spraying primer, paint the base shade with an airbrush, then pull out the fabric surface of the raft with a light dry brush and a fine wash into the folds. It is exactly the contrast between a light surface and dark shadows that makes the whole effect on a part this small.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Wildcat who want to take a model all the way in detail
  • Makers of dioramas on the theme of rescuing a pilot at sea
  • Modelers used to working with resin and cyanoacrylate glue
  • Collectors who add small accessories to a model

This is an add-on set, not a model of the aircraft. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a small add-on, specifically a life raft for a separately bought Wildcat kit in 1:48.

With cyanoacrylate glue. Ordinary modeling cement for plastic will not join resin.

The set is shaped for this type, but as a separate item in a diorama in 1:48 it will work in another scene as well.

It is a small set focused on one item of equipment. Check the number of parts against the information stated on the box of the set.
