About product

A printed engine for the FM-1 Wildcat in 1:48 scale

The most extensive of the resin accessories that the Czech manufacturer Eduard offers for the FM-1 Wildcat carrier-borne fighter in 1:48 scale. The PRINT designation means 3D printing from resin, thanks to which even the thin tubes of the lines and the fine ribbing of the cylinders can be printed in one piece. The accessory makes sense above all when you want to build the model with the cowling opened up or with a part of the engine cover laid beside the aircraft on a base. It is not a model of an aircraft but an internal detail, which is fitted into a model under construction.

The real subject

The FM-1 is the licensed rendering of the Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat fighter by the Eastern Aircraft division of the General Motors corporation. Its powerplant was the fourteen-cylinder two-row Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial with a two-stage supercharger, that is an engine with two rows of cylinders one behind the other. That is a substantial difference against the later FM-2, which was given a single-row nine-cylinder Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial and which you will also recognize by its taller fin. The set therefore belongs to the FM-1 version and to the F4F-4, not to the FM-2. Besides the Wildcat the Twin Wasp also powered the Dakota and the Catalina, so it is one of the most widespread American aircraft engines of the war.

Usage tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry through thoroughly. Separate them from the supporting structure in small steps, as the fine lines are fragile. Assemble the engine and paint it away from the model, and only then fit it with cyanoacrylate glue. A proven procedure is a base in a dark shade, a dry brush with metallic paint on the edges of the ribs and a dark wash into the recesses. Check dry how the engine sits against the cowling before you start painting.

Who the set is for

  • More experienced modelers who want the Wildcat with the cowling opened up
  • Builders of dioramas with a workshop or deck scene
  • Anyone interested in American radial engines and their details
  • Modelers who like painting small assemblies away from the model

FAQ

The two-row fourteen-cylinder Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial, that is the powerplant of the FM-1 and F4F-4 versions.

No. The FM-2 had a single-row nine-cylinder Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial, which is a different engine with a different shape and number of cylinders.

The benefit is then small. The set pays off when you leave the cowling opened up or place the model in a workshop scene.

It calls for patience and work with cyanoacrylate glue. We recommend it to modelers who have already worked with resin.
