This is an injection-molded plastic kit of the FM-1 Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Tamiya. The model can be built as a US Navy aircraft or as a British Martlet Mk.V of the Fleet Air Arm; both marking options are in the box. The cockpit can be closed or left open with the canopy slid back, and a figure of a seated pilot is included. The surface is finely engraved with rivets and panel lines suggested.
The Wildcat was one of the most successful carrier fighters of the early period of the war in the Pacific. The FM-1 version was built by the Eastern Aircraft division of General Motors to free Grumman's capacity for newer types. Compared with the earlier Wildcats the FM-1 had simplified armament with four wing machine guns. The aircraft also served with British naval aviation under the designation Martlet Mk.V, among other things from the decks of escort carriers protecting convoys.
Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic. The complex retractable landing gear is simplified in its parts count by the design of the kit, yet it keeps the detail of the gear bays; take care to seat the legs correctly. Masking the cockpit before painting is advisable. Go over the surface with a gloss coat before the decals, and a matte coat will even the surface out at the end. The blue-gray American and British camouflage schemes come out well with panel shading through an airbrush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
