HGW 1:48 Hawker Tempest masking set

A masking set for the glazing of the Hawker Tempest fighter in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer HGW. It is neither a kit nor a finished model: it is an accessory for a model that you already have under construction. Alongside masks the manufacturer also makes fabric seat belts and photo-etched parts, but this item is a masking set only.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest was a British single-engined fighter of the final phase of the Second World War, developed from the Typhoon. It was notable for a thin elliptical wing and high speed at low altitudes. The bubble canopy has a simple but prominent frame, which cannot do without clean masking on a model. It is exactly on a smooth bubble shape that every uneven edge of paint shows at first glance, because nothing distracts from it.

How to use the mask

• Separate the part from the backing with a scalpel or tweezers and stick it on the degreased clear canopy.
• Press the film down along the whole outline with a wooden toothpick, so that no gap is left anywhere.
• Cover the rest of the area with masking tape or with masking fluid.
• Spray several thin coats rather than one heavy one, because a heavy coat runs under the edge.
• Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, at a sharp angle to the surface.
