A kit of the British Hawker Tempest Mk.V fighter in 1:48 scale. The subject is one of the fastest piston fighters of the closing stage of the Second World War.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Hawker Tempest Mk.V came about by reworking the Typhoon, which lacked an efficient wing. It received a new, markedly thinner wing, a longer fuselage and a massive radiator in the nose, by which you recognize it at first glance. The power came from a Napier Sabre piston engine with its cylinders arranged in an H, that is, an H-24 engine, neither inline nor V. The armament consisted of four 20 mm cannon in the wing. At low level the Tempest was among the fastest piston fighters of its day, and it was precisely its speed that made it the most successful hunter of V-1 flying bombs over England. For the rest of the war it operated over northwestern Europe, where it attacked ground targets and also measured itself against the first jet machines.
For aircraft, 1:48 scale is a good compromise: the model fits into an ordinary display case and is at the same time big enough for a well-worked cabin, wheel bays and fine surface details. The span of the finished model comes out at roughly 26 cm.
Finish and paint the cabin before you glue the fuselage together; later you cannot get into it. Glue the clear parts with a cement intended for clear surfaces so that they do not go matte. British machines of the closing stage of the war usually carry a coat in two shades above and light undersurfaces; spray the transitions softly, freehand or over a raised mask. Apply the mask to the cabin before spraying and take it off only after the last coat has dried.
Paints, glue and filler are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
