Masking cut-outs for spraying RAF roundels onto a 1:48 model of the Typhoon ground-attack aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Typhoon entered service as a failed high-altitude fighter and ended up as a feared ground-attack aircraft that destroyed columns and bridges over Normandy. Its powerful Napier Sabre engine gave it the strength to carry rocket and bomb armament in low-level flight, and its silhouette with the thick wing became one of the symbols of the closing stage of the war in Europe. Machines flown on free-ranging sweeps often had their markings oversprayed and renewed, so the result never looked as if it had come off a printing press.
A sprayed marking has no glossy film and no visible edge and behaves just like the paint around it, which matters most on matte surfaces, where a decal gives away the slightest unevenness. The set supplies a cut-out of its own for each ring, so the concentric circles are laid down one after another, exactly on top of each other.
The light base is sprayed first; once it has dried the disc for the next color is laid on and the work continues from the lightest shade to the darkest. Between the steps let the paint really go off, or the edge will tear when the film is lifted. A small irregularity in the result does not matter at all, because the markings looked much the same on the real aircraft.
The bag holds a sheet of masks. The plastic model, paints and glue do not belong with it and are bought separately. Before sticking the cut-outs on it is good to have the base finished and fully cured, because a soft finish could lift when the film is removed. Anyone who wants the markings as faithful as possible can dust the edges lightly with the base shade once the mask is off, and so imitate faded or partly oversprayed markings.
