Painting masks from MH models for spraying the markings onto a model of the Heinkel He 111H-6 bomber in 1:48 scale. The set complements the masks for the national insignia and covers the part of the airframe lettering that tends to be the most noticeable on a model. What exactly the package contains and in how many pieces is stated on the box. The masks are cut for the ICM kit.
Markings sprayed through a mask are part of the layer of paint, not a sticker on top of it. That pays off especially where the surface is to be matte when finished: a decal on a matte finish always shows through a little at the rim, while a sprayed marking never does. At the same time the risk of a large decal wrinkling or tearing as it settles disappears.
With sprayed markings the sequence decides everything. The proven order is: finished camouflage, thorough curing of the paint, a thin gloss intermediate coat, only then the masks and the spraying of the markings, and finally matting the whole model. The gloss intermediate coat has two functions at once: it creates a smooth base on which the mask seals, and it keeps the matte camouflage from drawing the color of the marking under the edge. Place the masks according to the building instructions and period drawings rather than by eye, because on a twin-engine bomber an inaccuracy of two millimeters shows at first glance, as the eye compares the left and right sides.
This is not a kit. The set contains painting masks only; the model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
