An injection-molded plastic model of the German Heinkel He 162 A-2 jet fighter in 1:48 scale from Tamiya (manufacturer's part number 61097). The kit captures the characteristic small aircraft with its jet engine mounted on the top of the fuselage and its pair of endplate fins. The model is built from injection-molded plastic; photo-etched parts and masks are not included in the box.
The He 162 came about under the Volksjäger (people's fighter) program as a jet interceptor that had to be cheap and quick to produce for the defense of the Reich at the close of the war. It was powered by a single BMW 003 turbojet mounted above the fuselage, and the structure made heavy use of wood to save strategic metals. The aircraft was developed exceptionally quickly and reached combat use only in the last weeks of the war; it was nicknamed the Salamander. It belongs among the iconic last-hour aircraft of the Luftwaffe.
Liquid cement for plastic and a careful fit of the dorsal engine nacelle are recommended. A small aircraft with smooth surfaces benefits from a good primer and an airbrush. Late war machines carried simple camouflage with hard edges – masking and a light emphasis of the panels with a wash are worth the effort. Prepare your own tape for masking the canopy glazing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
