Omask 1:48 Hellcat mask set

This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. The set contains self-adhesive templates cut for a model of the Grumman Hellcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. The templates are stuck onto the model before spraying and taken off once the paint has dried, so the edge stays sharp with no cutting of tape by hand. The maker is the Czech brand Omask. The set is intended for the Eduard kit.

The real subject

The Grumman Hellcat was an American carrier fighter of the Second World War, designed as a rugged and easily handled machine for operating from aircraft carriers. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine, and the wing folded back along the fuselage for stowage in the hangar. The design put the emphasis on toughness, the view from the cockpit and undemanding handling, which showed in its extensive use in the Pacific. The type also served with the Fleet Air Arm.

Use and tips

• Degrease the surface of the model before sticking the masks on and let the base coat cure thoroughly.
• Press the edge of the template down along its whole length, so that no paint creeps under it.
• Spray thin layers perpendicular to the edge of the mask, not at an angle underneath it.
• Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, slowly and at a sharp angle.

For modelers who want clean framing and sharp color edges on the Hellcat without the lengthy business of masking with tape. Working with the templates is undemanding and even a beginner with basic spraying practice will manage it.
