A set of shaped masking stencils for the cockpit frames of a model of the FMA IA 58 Pucará in 1:48 scale. The name of the set states that it is cut for the Kinetic kit.
The Pucará is an Argentine twin-engine aircraft intended for close support of ground troops. The design relied on simplicity and toughness so that the machine could operate from short and unpaved strips. The crew sits in two places one behind the other, the cockpit is set high and the glazing is long so that both men can see down to the terrain. The type became more widely known during the conflict over the Falklands in 1982. The long cockpit is also the reason why masking on a model of the Pucará is more laborious than on a single-seat fighter: there are considerably more frames and they run across the whole spine of the fuselage.
Cutting tape by hand for that many frames is slow and a single slip of the blade is enough to leave a scratch on the clear part. A pre-cut stencil holds the shape of the frame for you and the width of the frames comes out the same on both sides of the cockpit.
Wash and degrease the clear part; on a greasy surface a mask does not hold and the paint creeps under. Apply the stencils before spraying and press the edges down with a blunt tip. Apply the paint square to the surface and in thin coats. With a cockpit this long it pays to work in sections and to keep checking whether any of the frames has lifted. Take the masks off while the coat has not yet fully cured.
