Eduard SPACE 1:48 Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik is a set of three-dimensional decals with raised relief and printed color for the cockpit of a model of the Il-2 attack aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is an accessory for a kit.

SPACE is Eduard's range of decals that are not flat. The print is laid onto a carrier film in layers, so genuine relief is created: knobs, levers and instrument bezels have height and cast a shadow. The coloring is printed at the factory, so the modeler paints nothing. The set is intended for the cockpit of an Il-2 Shturmovik model in 1:48 scale and replaces hand painting of the panels and the side walls. Eduard is a Czech maker from Obrnice near Most; a model of the aircraft is not part of the package.
The Il-2 Shturmovik is a Soviet single-engine attack aircraft of the Second World War period. The forward part of the fuselage is formed by a load-bearing armored bathtub, which encloses both the engine and the pilot's compartment, so the cockpit is cramped and its walls are made of smooth armor plates with bolts and simple brackets. That is a layout three-dimensional decals suit: a large flat area and on it sharply bounded instruments and controls.
Three-dimensional decals are applied differently from classic ones. The base has to be smooth, glossy and above all clean, because the relief cannot be pressed down over an unevenness. Do not immerse the film in water; with a sponge, wet only the carrier paper under the element and transfer the freed element with tweezers into a drop of white dispersion glue. Unlike with ordinary decals, no softener and no fixative is used at all, as their chemistry damages the printed resin and the raised effect disappears. Never press into the decal with a finger or a cotton bud while it is wet. Draw the excess moisture off with the corner of a paper tissue applied from the side and let it dry undisturbed for several hours. Choose a very thin final clear coat and apply it from a distance in a fine mist, otherwise the shine of the instrument glass is drowned. A cockpit with three-dimensional decals looks best with the canopy open, where the depth of the relief is visible.
