A masking set for the control surfaces and flaps of the J7W Shinden in 1:48 scale. The sprayed shadow creates the impression that the surfaces are separate and deflected.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set is neither for the canopy nor for the national insignia. The templates are applied to the control surfaces and flaps and a fine shadow is sprayed through them along the dividing gap. The eye then perceives the surface as a separate, slightly deflected part, even though the model is molded in one piece. It is therefore an optical illusion; no surface actually deflects and none can be moved.
The Kyushu J7W Shinden was a Japanese interceptor with an unusual layout. The propeller was mounted at the rear as a pusher, the main wing was moved aft and at the front the aircraft carried canard foreplanes. The machine never reached series production. For a modeler it is interesting precisely because of that distribution of control surfaces, since besides ailerons and rudders it also has elevators on the forward canard surface.
Work only on finished camouflage. Lay the template along the dividing line and spray the shadow with a very heavily thinned darker variant of the same shade, never with black, which overplays the result. Hold the airbrush at a short distance, at low pressure, and lay the paint on bit by bit until the transition gains depth. The effect should be barely perceptible; as soon as you register it as a line, there is too much of it. With the canard layout of the Shinden, decide in advance from which side the imagined light falls on the model, so that the shadows on the forward and the rear surfaces match each other.
