A loose scenery material from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene. The package contains laser-cut paper leaves with the characteristic palmate shape of a maple leaf, colored into dry red to reddish-brown tones. This is therefore the dry, fallen foliage of late autumn, not the fresh red of Indian summer, and certainly not a finished tree — the modeler builds fallen leaves or foliage on their own armature from the material.
Dry red maple litter is rewarding under solitary trees, in avenues, in neglected gardens and in parks. It also works well in places where foliage stays longer: in ditches, by low walls, between roots, in the corners of yards and on roofs. Given its strong color, it pays to sprinkle it deliberately, in islands and under a crown, so that the scene does not read as uniform. For foliage, the leaves are applied in layers to an armature of wire or natural rootlets.
Sprinkled foliage is fixed with thin white PVA glue diluted with water and a drop of dish soap, applied with a sprayer. Individual leaves are attached with tweezers and gel cyanoacrylate. The dry impression is helped by a light overspray of matte varnish and a fine dusting of pigment in an ocher or gray-brown shade, which mutes the color and visually settles the foliage into the terrain. Layering different shades of foliage adds depth to a scene.
The material is supplied as loose foliage. The glue, the tree armature and any further scenery accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
