A plastic kit of the Kaman helicopter in 1:48 scale from the AMP brand. According to the name it covers two related designations of the same machine, the HOK-1 and the HUK-1, which differed mainly in their intended use with the individual services. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted and it is a type offered in this scale only rarely.
Kaman helicopters are recognized at first glance: instead of the usual combination of a main rotor and a tail rotor for torque compensation they have a pair of counter-rotating rotors whose blades intermesh with each other in flight. The reaction torque cancels itself out and the machine needs no tail rotor, which shows in the characteristic silhouette with a pair of rotor heads tilted toward each other. The HOK-1 served as an observation and liaison machine and the HUK-1 was its counterpart in another role; both versions were powered by a radial piston engine. After the designation system was unified they became machines of the OH-43 and UH-43 series. From the same design basis there later grew a better-known turbine relative, which made its name above all in rescue and firefighting duties.
The most sensitive place in the whole build is the rotor system. Both heads have to be tilted at the same angle and the blades must not collide, so assemble them dry first and fix them only after checking; a simple paper jig or a stick glued between the heads will help to hold the symmetry until the glue cures. The glazed cockpit is extensive on this type, so it pays to use masking tape or ready-made masks and to spray the frames with the interior color first. We recommend finishing and shading the interior before the fuselage is closed. Try the seating of the large parts dry before gluing and reckon on a little filler at the joints. The painting can be managed with ordinary acrylics and an airbrush; at the end comes a glossy surface under the decals, matte clear and only a very restrained patina — helicopters of this category tended to be well kept, so heavy dirt would look unconvincing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
