The set is a modeling accessory, not a model. It consists of pre-cut masks made of kabuki masking paper tape, traced exactly from the glazing of the Soviet Mi-4A helicopter in 1:48 scale. At New Ware the BASIC designation defines the extent of the sheet: it is the smallest of the levels offered, while the larger ADVANCED and EXPERT variants add further masked elements of the airframe. The masks are cut to fit the Mi-4A kit from Trumpeter.
The Mi-4 has a cockpit made up of many small panes with narrow frames, and a glazed station in the nose as well. Cutting such shapes out of self-adhesive tape with a scalpel means hours of work and one single slip, which is then the most visible thing on the finished model. A pre-cut mask fits the shape of the pane, holds the sharp edge of the frame, and removes the risk of scratching the clear part with the scalpel.
The Mil Mi-4 was a Soviet piston-engined transport and utility helicopter of the 1950s, with the engine in the nose and a cargo hold with clamshell doors at the rear. In the West it received the reporting name Hound. The Mi-4A version was a transport and assault machine; it served with the Soviet armed forces and in a number of other countries as well as in civil operation, and became one of the most widespread helicopters of its generation.
First degrease the clear parts and let them dry completely. Lift the mask off the backing sheet with tweezers, seat it dry and only then press it down with a soft wooden stick, working from the center out to the edges. Cover the remaining areas of the cockpit with tape or masking fluid. Spray the interior color of the frames first, then the base coat and finally the outer camouflage. Remove the mask while the paint is merely dry, not after long curing.
