Canopy masks for the MiG-15 in 1:48 scale

A set of masks for the canopy of a model of the MiG-15 and MiG-15bis jet fighter in 1:48 scale. It is cut for the kit from the Bronco brand, so the shapes of the parts correspond to the glazing of that very kit.

Why use masks

The canopy frames on a model are narrow and run in curves, which is exactly the work where cutting tape by hand does not pay off. A mask cut beforehand holds the shape of the frame for you and the boundary between the frame and the glass comes out sharp the first time. It also does away with scraping dried paint off the glazing, which on clear parts is seldom managed without a scratch.

How to work with the masks

• The masks are applied before spraying, not onto dried paint.
• Wash the clear part beforehand, degrease it and let it dry perfectly.
• Peel the piece off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers and press the edges down carefully.
• Spray in thin coats; a heavy layer will run under the edge of the mask.
• Spray the frame first with the cockpit shade and only then with the top color.
• Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set, not after it has cured completely.

The real subject

The MiG-15 was a Soviet jet fighter with a swept wing, one of the most widespread machines of its day, which served in many countries. The bis designation belongs to an improved form of the same type, which came after the basic version.
