A color print of the instrument panel and the cockpit details with a 3D texture from Red Fox Studio. The carrier is decal paper, so the set is applied by soaking and positioning, not by gluing. A version for a different kit exists under the same name, which is why the shape of the print is matched precisely to the parts from Academy; keep an eye on that when choosing.
The MiG-21MF has a cockpit that is tight and deep even by Soviet standards. The instrument panel is narrow, the dials are crowded onto it in two or three rows and the upper edge is largely hidden by the gunsight, so once the canopy is closed it is mainly the lower part of the panel and the inside of its frame that stay in view. Nothing here glows like a display: everything is round analog dials, supplemented by densely populated side consoles with toggle switches that run from the panel all the way to the seat back. It is precisely those consoles that decide whether the cockpit looks full or empty.
The decal with a panel supplied in the box is flat and seen from above you can tell. Photo-etch brings depth, but you have to paint the scales yourself or back them up. And painting dozens of dials by hand in 1:48 is the most demanding part of the whole cockpit for most modelers. A print on decal paper goes both ways at once: it has colored scales as well as a raised texture. Apply it to a smoothly painted and degreased base, settle it with a decal softener and let it dry through before you close the cockpit up.
