A set of self-adhesive painting masks from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the Mil Mi-17 transport helicopter in 1:48 scale. The masks are pre-cut to the shape of the individual window frames, so the slow cutting of tape with a knife falls away, and with it the risk of a frame ending up slightly out of place. The Mi-17 has a glazed forward part of the cabin and a row of side windows, so masking is one of the more laborious parts of the build and a ready-made set saves a lot of time here. The basic plastic model is bought separately.
The Mil Mi-17 is the export designation of a transport helicopter derived from the Mi-8MT. Compared with the older machines of the Mi-8 family it has more powerful TV3-117 turboshaft engines and the tail rotor moved to the left side of the tail boom. It is used in transport, airborne, rescue and firefighting roles and serves in dozens of countries, so the model offers a genuinely wide choice of finishes, from military camouflage to striking civilian liveries.
Wash the glazing first in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry. Lift the mask off the sheet with tweezers, lay it in place and press it down with a toothpick all around the edge. Spray the paint in thin coats, otherwise it bleeds under the edge. Take the mask off shortly after the paint dries, slowly and at a sharp angle. If you do not want the cabin to be seen into, you can block the windows from the inside with a piece of masking tape or modeling putty, which also keeps sanding dust out.
