The reconnaissance version of the Mirage III differs from the fighter one in its nose: instead of a radar it holds a battery of photographic cameras, which could take a continuous strip of pictures during a single pass. The French ER 3/33 Moselle group flew these machines from Strasbourg and in 1988 had festive artwork painted on one of them for reaching ninety thousand hours flown. The machine with the code 33-TG is the subject of this sheet.
Alongside the jubilee motif, which is the main attraction of the subject, the sheet carries the badges of the squadron, French roundels, the codes on the fuselage and a row of service lettering. The reconnaissance Mirage had its own set of markings around the nose and the camera windows that does not occur on the fighter versions, so the set cannot be used on another variant of the type without thought.
Festive artwork of this scale settles best on a smooth base clear-coated to a gloss. Cut the motif out, soak it briefly and let it rest until the film releases from its paper backing by itself. Transfer it onto the model together with a piece of the backing and only then slide it off. Around the camera windows and at the transitions between panels use a decal softener and press the film into the engraving with a finger or a damp brush. Finally clear-coat the whole thing so that the edges of the film disappear.
In the name the type designation is repeated in two forms, because the French records distinguished the IIIR and IIIRD versions. These are two production standards of the same reconnaissance Mirage, not two different aircraft.
