There are finishes that are worn for one season, and then those an aircraft is given only for a farewell. The treatment of machine number 59 with the code CF belongs to the second group; its markings carry a French phrase saying that it is done. The years 1964 and 2005 mark out the whole time the Mirage IV type was in French service, and the sheet in 1:48 scale reproduces this final guise faithfully.
Few combat aircraft last over forty years in active service. The Mirage IV managed it because, after losing its strike role, it found a use in long-range reconnaissance, where its speed and range were valued. The last examples flew out their time at the start of the new millennium and their departure was felt in France as the end of an epoch.
Farewell artwork tends to be rich in design and to hold lettering in fairly small type. Look it over with a magnifier before settling it, so that you know where a thin line runs that clumsy pushing out of water could break. Work over a soft mat and cut the overhanging edge with a sharp knife, not with scissors. Finally unify the surface with a varnish, so that the sheen of the artwork does not differ from its surroundings.
Anyone building the developmental series of the French airborne carrier usually closes it with exactly this machine. In a display case it makes a natural counterpart to the anniversary finishes of the 1980s and 1990s, which were still celebrating the continuation of operation.
