A retarding tail section and thermal protection of the casing - 1:48 MK-82 with thermal protection and MK-15 Snakeye fin from AMMO of Mig Jimenez for models in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The 500 lb bomb in the form known from the decks of aircraft carriers: with a protective layer against fire and with folding retarding surfaces. The set is meant for adding to a finished aircraft model.
The deploying Snakeye fin came about in the early 1960s as the answer to an unpleasant problem: during an attack from low altitude the aircraft caught up with its own ordnance and risked being hit by fragments. Four sheet metal surfaces open out into a cross once the bomb is released, brake the fall sharply and give the crew time to leave the endangered area. Bombing like this was done most over Vietnam and the technique stayed in the arsenal for a long time afterwards. The light roughened layer on the casing is ablative protection, which the US Navy brought in after the catastrophic carrier fires; it is meant to delay the ordnance igniting on its own in a fire.
The opened fin is the most striking element of the whole weapon, so give it the greatest care when cleaning up the edges. The protective layer should look rougher than the smooth body - a matte texture sprayed from a greater distance captures this well. The shade tends to be a light green-gray, and on live rounds colored bands are added. Decide the folded or the opened position of the surfaces in advance according to your scene.
It is supplied unpainted; the base kit, the pylons and the chemicals have to be obtained separately.
