About product

Single-sided masking set 1:48 N1K1 Kyofu Type 11 (Art Scale)

A self-adhesive Art Scale masking set for a model of the Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu floatplane fighter in 1:48 scale. The masks are pre-cut to their final shape along the outlines of the canopy framing, so there is no cutting of tape with a scalpel. The single-sided version covers the outer side of the clear parts; the inner sides of the framing are touched in with a brush as needed. It is an accessory for the Tamiya kit, not the model itself.

Why a pre-cut mask

A bubble canopy with several divided frames is very hard to mask with tape; the edge breaks on a curve and a jagged transition results. A pre-cut shape solves that problem, holds a clean line and is the same on both sides of the model.

The real subject

The Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu was a Japanese single-seat fighter with a central float and two outrigger floats under the wing, powered by a radial engine. It was designed for operation from stretches of water where no fixed airfields were available. The design later became the basis for a land version with conventional landing gear. In modeling the type is interesting for its combination of a slender fuselage, a prominent float arrangement and a well glazed cockpit.

Applying, spraying and lifting off

Wash the clear part in lukewarm water with detergent and let it air dry. Lift the mask off with tweezers, lay it along the outline of the frame and press it down with a blunt toothpick along the whole length of the edge. On a curved canopy, do not stretch the mask; seat it from the center first and only then press the ends down. Spray several thin coats with a pause; a heavy coat laid on all at once runs under even a well pressed edge. Take the masks off shortly after drying, with an angled pull along the surface.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Japanese floatplane fighter in 1:48 scale
  • Those who want sharp framing without cutting tape by hand
  • Beginners for whom masking a cockpit is the biggest obstacle
  • Airbrush users who require a reliably tight edge

The box holds masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included.

The masks are applied to the outer side of the glazing. The inner edges of the framing are touched in with a brush, or choose the double-sided variant.

Do not stretch it. Lay it on from the center first, press it down toward the ends and finally go over the whole edge with a blunt toothpick.

No. The cut matches the shapes of the particular kit in 1:48 scale that is given in the name.
