A masking set for a model of the Mi-2 helicopter in 1:72 scale, covering the T, US, URN and URP variants. The sheet contains self-adhesive templates cut to the shape of a specific Hobby Boss kit, so there is nothing to measure or trim. The set deals with spraying the glazing, which on this helicopter is unusually extensive.
The Mi-2, with the NATO reporting name Hoplite, is a light twin-engine helicopter with turboshaft engines above the cabin. Series production was carried out under license in Poland and the machine spread to a good many countries in Eastern Europe and beyond. It was used in the transport, liaison, medical evacuation and training roles, but armed versions with weapons on side pylons existed as well. The letters in the variant designations distinguish exactly that specialization.
The cabin of the Mi-2 is glazed deep down and far forward, so it makes up a large part of the front half of the fuselage. Trimming tape by hand over so many panes is slow work and the result tends to be uneven, while a decal never lays down cleanly over the edges of the frames. A pre-cut mask gives a crisp frame of the same width across the whole cabin once sprayed. The procedure: place the mask with tweezers, press it down all round with a soft wooden stick, and overspray first with the interior shade and then with the upper color in thin coats. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried: the longer they stay on the model, the harder the adhesive gets and the greater the risk that it leaves a mark on a clear part. If some adhesive does remain, remove it carefully with a cotton swab moistened in clean water, not with solvent.
The package contains masking templates only. The kit, the paints and the glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
