N1K1 Shiden Landing Gear Doors 1:48 (Quickboost)

This resin set from Quickboost, made by Aires, brings faithfully cast landing gear doors for a model of the Japanese single-engine Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an airplane model but a detail accessory for more experienced modelers, replacing the thicker plastic parts with a thin casting with correctly suggested inner pressings. Once closed, the wheel bays and the gear legs look more accurate.

The real subject

The Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden was a Japanese single-engine land-based fighter from the end of the Second World War, known to the Allies by the reporting name George. It came about by converting the Kyofu floatplane fighter to wheeled landing gear and was powered by a capable radial engine. It excelled in agility and heavy cannon armament and was among the best Japanese naval fighters of its day.

Tips for working with resin

First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water to remove mold release residue from the mold. Cut off the casting blocks with a saw and sand the cut surfaces with respiratory protection. Bond the parts with super glue (cyanoacrylate), not with plastic cement.
