This is a scenic item for a diorama in 1:48 scale, not a model and not a kit. The beaver-tail is a fired clay tile with a rounded lower edge, laid with an overlap in scales; it is that characteristic rhythm that makes the roof recognizable even from a distance. In a scene a roof is a large continuous area, so the credibility of a whole building rests on how it is done more than on most other details.
The scale is the distinguishing figure. The accessory is made for 1:48. The same subject is also made in other scales: for 1:35 or 1:72 choose the matching version, as on a regularly repeating element the wrong size is noticeable at once.
On the roofs of farmhouses, outbuildings, sheds and shelters in a scene, for small repairs to damaged roofing or for a stacked pile of tiles beside a building under construction. It also looks interesting where the roof is not complete: a missing stretch of roofing with the battens exposed is a rewarding storytelling element.
Wash the parts before painting, cut the casting remnants away and sand the face. Start laying from the bottom edge and work upwards with an overlap so that the water runs off correctly. Painting starts from a brick-red base; only the departures make a roof look alive, so shade the individual tiles slightly, add a darker wash into the joints, greenish-gray patches of moss on the north side and light dust on the ridge. A dry brush pulls out the edges. A roof should be flat, as a sheen would give it away as a model at once.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and other material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
