Eduard 1:48 — P-40, rounded exhaust stacks (PRINT)

Please note: this is NOT a kit. It is an add-on detail set from Eduard in 1:48 scale that replaces the exhaust stacks from the plastic kit. The aircraft model itself is not included in the package — you have to own it. According to the manufacturer the set is intended for the Eduard P-40E kit and is made by direct 3D printing from resin (the PRINT designation).

Why the exhaust stacks are worth changing

The stacks sit on the sides of the engine cowling, that is exactly where everyone looks. An injection-molded plastic part tends to have thick walls and blanked-off stack mouths — on a finished model it reads as a solid cylinder. 3D printing can do thin walls and genuinely open, through-going mouths, which cannot be produced by molding. On top of that it is the first place where weathering is done: soot and smoke trails behind the exhausts are among the most striking effects on a model.

Rounded exhaust stacks — and why it matters

The P-40 was built in many versions and the exhausts were not the same on every machine: alongside rounded stacks there were also fishtail exhausts, for which a separate set exists. This set covers the rounded variant. Before you fit it to a P-40 other than the one the manufacturer intends it for, compare the shape of the stacks against the documentation of the particular machine you are building — parts are not automatically interchangeable between P-40 versions.

Tips for working with resin

Resin does not bond with polystyrene modeling cement — it does not dissolve it. Use super glue (cyanoacrylate), or epoxy on a larger area. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry; otherwise print resin residue keeps the paint from holding. Do the sanding and cleaning up wet — resin dust is harmful and must not be inhaled.
