This resin set from Brengun is a conversion accessory. It makes it possible to build, from an ordinary plastic kit of the Curtiss P-40 fighter in 1:48 scale, a machine re-engined with a Soviet liquid-cooled Klimov engine. It is not an airplane model but a set of replacement parts that you have to use together with a base kit obtained separately.
The Soviet Air Force received P-40 fighters during the war under Allied deliveries. The original American engines wore out in service and spare parts for them were not available, so some of the machines were re-engined with domestic liquid-cooled Klimov engines in field and repair conditions. The conversion changed the outline of the nose, the arrangement of the exhausts and the cooling system, so the resulting aircraft differs from the factory configuration at first glance. It is exactly this form that the set makes it possible to build.
A conversion means cutting into the plastic: following the instructions, part of the fuselage or the cowling from the kit has to be cut off and replaced with the resin part. Make the cut on the cautious side and take the material off gradually, because you can always take more off but putting it back is harder. Wash the resin free of mold release in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand wet with respiratory protection. Dry-fit the assembly first and keep checking that the nose is in line with the fuselage, so that the model does not end up crooked. Bond with super glue, fill the gaps with putty and sand the whole transition smooth. Before painting, spray both the resin and the surrounding plastic with primer so that the whole surface has the same absorbency.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue, putty and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
