A set of masking templates for a model of the P-47 Thunderbolt with a bubble canopy in 1:48 scale, cut for the Tamiya kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The P-47 Thunderbolt was among the heaviest single-engine fighters of the Second World War. The late configuration, known as the Bubbletop, received a bubble canopy in place of the framed hood and the high spine. The pilot gained a view to the rear, and the modeler a large smooth area on which every inaccuracy in painting shows. The designation Bubbletop has taken hold in modeling practice for exactly this form of the machine.
Masking templates are shapes cut out in advance, which are stuck onto the model, protect the area under them and are taken off once sprayed. Against hand-cut tape they have two advantages: an accurate shape and a straight edge where it is most visible. The set is cut for the Tamiya kit, so the shapes match the parts from that kit; on another model they need not fit. The exact list of templates and their placing are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
First wash and degrease the surface, as a template does not hold on greasy plastic. Stick it on before spraying, press the edges down and make sure it is not standing off anywhere. Lay the paint on in thin coats and guide it rather square to the edge of the template, so that it does not run under it. Take the template off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch and before it cures fully, as a thick cured coat tears while being removed. Lift the edge with tweezers or the point of a knife.
The kit, paints and glue are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
