Quinta Studio 1:48 P-51D, a 3D printed color interior on decal paper (Tamiya), is an interior set for a classic piston-engined fighter. The cockpit here is broken up differently from a jet, and the set answers that.

Color 3D printing on decal paper comes into its own a little differently on piston-engined machines than on modern aircraft. The cockpit of the P-51D is not just a panel full of dials: a large part of how it looks is made up of the tubular frame, the sheet metal walls with lightening holes, the floor and the controls spread along the sides. The set therefore does not answer only the front panel but also the areas that give the cockpit its depth. It is cut for the Tamiya kit in 1:48 scale, and the manufacturer also makes the P-51D interior for kits from other makers and in a reduced version, so it is worth watching which set you are taking.
The P-51D is the most widely produced version of the Mustang, recognizable by its teardrop canopy and the raised spine behind the cockpit. That canopy is at the same time the reason why the interior pays off: there is a view inside from practically every direction and an empty cockpit lets the model down. The inner surfaces on these machines were typically in a greenish interior shade, against which the black instrument panels and the metal controls stand out strongly.
Work with lukewarm water and give the decal time. Leave the panel in the dish only until the film starts to release from the backing, then lay it in place together with the paper and pull the paper out from under it. Cold water slows the process down, while hot water softens the layer more than is healthy. Once the panel is seated, let it dry for several hours without touching it, because every handling of a half-dry 3D decal ends in a fingerprint in the relief. Only then come the gloss varnish and the assembly; a decal softener and a setting solution have no place on these elements, as they would attack the printed resin.
