Masking set for the 1:48 North American P-51D Mustang. It masks the cockpit glazing from the outer and the inner face of the frames and adds two sets of stencils for the national insignia.

The late Mustangs left the factory with no covering paint. Polished metal saved a few tens of kilograms and became a recognition feature of the type, but for a modeler it is the most demanding surface that exists. A layer imitating metal is thin, smooth and cannot be repaired locally: where the edge of a tape once lifts or a mark of adhesive is left, the whole panel has to be sanded back and resprayed, because a new coat will have a different sheen from its surroundings.
Why a stencil on a canopy that has almost no frames. The sliding teardrop above the pilot's head really is clean and on its own would not need a cut shape. What decides the matter is the windscreen with its inset armored glass and the narrow collar around the base of the teardrop. There a hand-cut strip cannot be laid so that it leaves nothing extra behind on the metal around it.
Who it works for. For anyone going for the silver finish. The saving here is not mainly in time but in not having to risk a repair on a surface that will not take one.
Insignia. The pair of sets makes it possible to layer the light and the dark part of the insignia one over the other. On bare metal that looks markedly better than a decal, whose carrier film always shows through a little on a polished base.
Before you start. Wash the clear parts and let them dry in the open, without wiping. Fibers from a cloth cling to the seating surface and then create a channel under the film through which the paint gets inside.
