The framing of the antisubmarine Kamov

The Ka-27 belongs to the machines with a pair of contra-rotating main rotors one above the other. Precisely for that reason it does without a tail rotor, the overall length is shortened and the machine fits into the hangar of a warship. That is also where its service over the sea comes from, where it searched for submarines and rescued crews.

What the stencils cover

The subject here is not a camouflage finish but the breakdown of the glazing. The cabin of the Kamov has deep front panes, side windows of the cabin and smaller vision panels in the pilots' compartment, and a network of narrow frames runs between them. The set adds discs for the wheels to them, where the rim has to be separated from the rubber.

Cutting such a network by hand with a knife directly on the part tends to end with a cut into the transparent plastic, and every scratch then shows on the finished model. With precisely cut film this step falls away.

The exterior finish on these machines tends to be monotonous, in a dark gray or blue-gray tone. What decides the final impression of the finished model is therefore mainly a sharply separated frame and clean glass. A blurred transition shows at first glance on large panes.

How to proceed

First free the transparent parts of grease from your fingers, let them dry and press the stencils down with a blunt toothpick so that the edge adheres too. Then follows a thin covering coat in the color of the cabin interior and only after it the exterior shade, so that the frame looks the same as on the real machine. On the wheels the rubber is masked and the rim is sprayed.

The package does not include the paints or the helicopter kit itself; it is a separate aid for spraying.
