This item is a detail accessory, not a kit. It replaces the engine in a plastic model of an aircraft in 1:48 scale with a more finely made casting. A two-row radial is a specific puzzle for a modeler: the rear row of cylinders is visible only in the gaps between the front ones, so the final impression is decided by the crispness of the finning and the depth of the shadow between the cylinders. That is exactly where a resin casting has the edge over injection-molded plastic, because it does not need mold parting lines running across the cylinders.
The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp is an American eighteen-cylinder air-cooled radial engine arranged in two rows of nine cylinders. It was among the most widespread powerful piston aero engines of its day and powered a whole range of single-engine fighters and twin-engine machines. It existed in many development versions, which differed for example in supercharging, in the reduction gear and in the shape of the accessories at the rear of the engine - so with a model it always pays to compare the casting with the documentation of the particular aircraft.
Before work, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that the release agent from the mold disappears. Cut the casting block off with a saw, not with pliers, and level the area by sanding wet. It is glued with super glue; ordinary plastic cement does not work on resin. After the primer it proves good to spray the cylinders with a dark base, go over them with a dry brush in a lighter metallic shade and leave the shadow between the fins - the engine then looks more three-dimensional. Pick the reduction housing, the rods and the plug leads out in different colors. Before gluing it into the cowling, test the fit dry: a resin engine tends to be slightly bulkier than the original plastic part and the mating surface sometimes calls for a little sanding.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
