An add-on set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard containing cast resin R-23R missiles for a model of the MiG-23 fighter in 1:48 scale. The package is completed with photo-etched parts and decals for the stenciling and the color bands. It is not an aircraft model but armament that you hang on a finished model in place of the coarser plastic missiles from the kit. The castings have crisper fin edges and a cleaner shape to the nose than can be achieved by injection molding.
The R-23 was a Soviet medium-range guided air-to-air missile, known in the West as the AA-7 Apex. It came in two main forms: the R-23R with semi-active radar guidance and the R-23T with infrared guidance. It was the radar version that formed the main weapon of MiG-23 fighters for combat at longer range, and it was carried under the fixed portion of the wing or on fuselage pylons. A pair of R-23s completed by smaller short-range missiles was a typical combat configuration for the Flogger.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap to remove the mold release agent residue, or the paint will not hold on them. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutter; never break them off. Resin is best sanded wet and with respiratory protection. It is bonded with super glue. Spray the missiles separately on a wire holder and only then hang them on the model; decals bed down better on a gloss surface and are fixed with a decal softener. A very fine wash is enough at the end, as service staining on external stores tends to be light.
This is not an aircraft kit but an add-on armament set. The base model, the glue and the paints are not included in the package.
