Markings for American Thunderbolt fighter bombers in the older form with a raised fuselage spine. Two machines of the famous 56th Fighter Group, scale 1:48.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Republic Thunderbolt was the heaviest single engine fighter of the war and its radial engine with a turbocharger took up so much room that the fuselage resembled a barrel rather than an aircraft. The pilots called it nothing but the Jug. Even so, the 56th Fighter Group made it the most successful unit of American fighter aviation in Europe.
This group differed from the others in one essential thing. While its neighbors gradually moved onto Mustangs, it stayed with Thunderbolts until the last day and learned to use what the machine was unbeatable at: speed in a dive, resistance to hits and the fire of eight machine guns. The nickname Wolfpack was not invented by propaganda but by the way the unit attacked.
The markings offered belong to the older appearance of the aircraft with a raised spine behind the cockpit, that is the form before the bubble canopy was introduced. The first machine, with serial number 42-74647, carried the letters LM and the individual marking V on the fuselage and served with the 62nd Fighter Squadron. The second, number 42-26293, flew with the 63rd Squadron under the letters UN with the marking L and had the name Belle of Belmont on the nose. Both machines are captured in their condition of 1944.
The usual waterslide procedure applies for application, but with lettering on the nose it pays to work in smaller parts. The curve of the cowling runs in two directions, so a large continuous motif lifts at the corners and without thorough softening it will no longer sit down.
What is sold is the markings alone, with no kit and no paints.
