This is not a model of the vehicle but a partial photo-etched set for a kit of the Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant heavy tank destroyer in 1:48 scale from the Tamiya brand you have already bought. The accessory is made by the Czech brand Hauler.
A fender is thin sheet that on the real vehicle measured a few millimeters. In a kit, because of the injection technology, it comes out as a plate whose thickness is visible from the side along the whole length of the hull and gives the scale away at first glance. A photo-etched fender removes that problem. The second advantage is in the look: metal can be shaped, so you can allow yourself a bent corner, a broken-off segment or slight waviness after a knock. The vehicle then does not look freshly built but like a machine in service, which adds markedly to the credibility of heavy equipment.
Separate the part with a scalpel and sand the fret tabs down. Make longer straight bends in one go in a bender or between a metal ruler and a surface. Model the bows and dents only after the basic shape has been bent: lay the metal on a soft backing, hard rubber for instance, and press with a blunt tool, so that a smooth deformation arises without sharp lines. Suggest a damaged edge by nipping it off and then sanding it, not by a straight cut. Degrease with spirit before gluing, and glue with super glue in sections, so that the part does not wander. Apply a primer to the metal, and when painting reckon with the fact that the fenders carry the most mud and dust of all, so it pays to grade the weathering on them from the lower edge upwards.
The Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant is a German heavy tank destroyer of the Second World War with an 88 mm gun in a fixed superstructure and gasoline-electric transmission of power. The vehicles committed in 1943 under their earlier designation went through a modification after which they carried among other things a machine gun in the front wall of the hull and a commander's cupola. The great weight of the machine made heavy demands on the running gear and on the routes of its moves.
The set is an accessory for a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
