A plastic kit of the American carrier-based Sikorsky SH-3H Sea King helicopter in 1:48 scale from Hasegawa of Japan, manufacturer's part number PT1. The package contains plastic frames, a decal sheet with markings of US Navy machines and a small photo-etched fret. The model captures the boat-shaped bottom of the fuselage and the side sponsons with the landing gear, that is the features by which the Sea King differed at a glance from other helicopters of its day.
The Sea King was created as a carrier-based anti-submarine helicopter: the bottom of its fuselage is shaped like a boat and allowed the machine to settle on the surface of the water, and the main rotor and the tail boom folded so that it would pass through the hangar elevator. The SH-3H version was a multi-purpose update of the later period which, beside hunting submarines, handled further duties of carrier service, including standing by during aircraft launches and recoveries and rescuing crews over water. It accompanied the aircraft carriers of the US Navy for several decades.
The largest surfaces here are smooth and light, so a fine primer and only then the paint itself pays off, otherwise the texture of the plastic shows through. Paint the interior and the cockpit before the fuselage is closed. Glue the photo-etched fret with cyanoacrylate glue. Set the rotor blades on last and check them against one another, or the finished model will look twisted. On smooth varnish the decals will then settle without silvering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
