About product

Spitfire Mk.XII against V-1 Flying Bomb 1:48 (Special Hobby)

This kit from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby captures the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XII in 1:48 scale. The release is themed around the use of this type against unmanned V-1 missiles in 1944, when fast machines with good performance near the ground were useful for intercepting them. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a classic injection-molded kit.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.XII was the first series-built Spitfire with the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. The Griffon with a single-stage supercharger gave its highest output at low altitudes, which the use of the type matched: it was a low-altitude fighter intended above all for intercepting fast targets flying low above the ground. Its recognition features were the shortened wings with clipped tips, a longer and narrower nose with characteristic bulges above the reduction gear casing, and the opposite direction of propeller rotation compared with the versions with the Merlin engine. The number built was small and the type served with only a few squadrons. The V-1 missile was an unmanned aircraft with a pulsejet engine, flying a straight course at low altitude and high speed, so intercepting it called for exactly a fast aircraft with good performance near the ground.

Building and painting tips

With smaller production runs it pays to try the assembly dry several times, above all at the joint of the wing and the fuselage. Finish and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage. On the plastic use a thin cement applied by capillary action to a joint that has been brought together, use as little filler as possible and sand instead. Spray gloss clear under the decals, coat them again once they are applied and finish with a matte or satin clear coat according to the look you want. Check the clipped wing tips against the documentation before gluing.

Who the model is for

  • builders of British fighters in 1:48 scale
  • anyone interested in the less usual Griffon-engined versions of the Spitfire
  • modelers with experience of injection-molded kits from smaller production runs
  • those who build themed groups around the defense against V-1 missiles

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

This is a kit of the Spitfire Mk.XII in a boxing focused on the defense against V-1 missiles. Whether the package also contains a model of the missile is given by the contents list on the box and in the instructions.

It had the Griffon engine instead of the Merlin, a longer and narrower nose with bulges, as a rule clipped wing tips and its best performance at low altitudes.

The number of parts and the range of color schemes are given in the instructions and on the box of the kit.

It is a product of a smaller production run, where it pays to try the fit dry. With basic experience the build is well manageable.
