A vacuum-formed transparent canopy for a model of the Spitfire PR Mk XIX in 1:48 scale from Rob Taurus. The open-closed version makes it possible to show the canopy open as well as closed. It is not an airplane model in its own right but an accessory intended for the Airfix kit; please check that it matches your kit before buying.
Vacuum-formed canopies tend to be markedly thinner and clearer than the original injection-molded parts, so the finished model looks more convincing and the cockpit is beautifully visible through the canopy. The open position moreover shows to advantage on the photo-reconnaissance PR Mk XIX version, an elegant Spitfire variant with the Griffon engine, which flew unarmed and relied on speed and altitude.
Cut the canopy out step by step with a sharp modeling knife or fine scissors and finish the edge with sandpaper. Use white glue or a special glue for clear parts; cyanoacrylate glue can fog transparent surfaces. Polish the canopy before the frames are painted and cover the framing with masks or narrow strips of masking tape.
This is an accessory for a model: the airplane kit itself is not included in the package.
