A set of photo-etched side armor skirts (Schürzen) for the model of the StuG III Ausf. G assault gun in 1:48 scale. It is an accessory for a model, not a kit, and it is among the most extensive sets of the whole range. The parts are cut for the Tamiya kit.
Schürzen were thin steel plates hung along the sides of the vehicle at a fixed standoff from the hull. Their job was to set off or deflect a hit early, before it reached the armor proper. It is precisely their thinness that is a problem on a model: in 1:48 scale a plastic skirt has a thickness that on the real vehicle would correspond to heavy armor, and from the front and the rear it is glaring. Photo-etched sheet looks like sheet - and on top of that it can be shaped, which is essential on this part, because in the field the skirts routinely bent, deformed and fell off.
First assemble and fix the hanging rails and only then hang the individual plates - the reverse order ends in the whole assembly twisting. Make the bends in a bender; larger areas are easier to straighten by pressing them against smooth hard glass than in your fingers. If you want the skirts damaged, press the metal in with a blunt rounded tip on a soft surface and bend the corners only after gluing, so that you keep control of the shape. Do not hang every piece: a missing or buckled skirt is common on period vehicles and gives a model character, and it also exposes the running gear. Degrease the metal, spray primer and paint at the same time as the hull, so that the shade matches.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; it is an accessory for a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
