About product

Tamiya Sturmtiger 1:48

An injection-molded plastic kit from the maker Tamiya captures the German 38 cm Sturmtiger assault mortar in 1:48 scale. This is a modern tooling which faithfully reproduces the massive superstructure, the lower hull, the running gear and the tracks assembled by the link-and-length method. The barrel of the 38 cm mortar is carried out as a part with the bore represented and allows elevation and traverse. The package also holds a swiveling loading crane at the rear, a front machine gun and one standing figure.

The real subject

The Sturmtiger was a rare derivative of the Tiger I tank in which an enormous rocket barrel of 38 cm caliber intended for destroying buildings and fortifications in urban fighting was mounted on the proven chassis. Only around eighteen of the vehicles came about in the second half of 1944 and, with a weight of around 65 tons, they were among the heaviest and most unusual machines of their time.

Building and painting tips

First assemble and finish painting the running gear and the lower hull. Use thin modeling cement on the plastic, fill the joints with putty and treat the surface with primer. An airbrush is ideal for spraying; you create the final patina with a wash and pigments, which bring out the rivets, the welds and the traces of wear of the massive superstructure.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in German armor of the Second World War.
  • Builders who will appreciate an unusual and striking subject for a collection.
  • Anyone interested in the smaller but detailed 1:48 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
