About product

Chaff and flare dispensers for the Su-17M3/M4 in 1:48 scale

A resin accessory set from the Czech maker Aires. It is not a model of the aircraft but a set of accurate castings with which you replace the simplified blocks of chaff and flare dispensers on the spine and the sides of the fuselage. The castings have crisply molded shapes of the individual tubes and edges, which are hard to reach in injection-molded plastic in this scale. The set is aimed at modelers who want to pull out exactly these prominent and clearly visible details on a finished model.

The real subject

The Sukhoi Su-17 was a Soviet ground-attack and fighter-bomber aircraft derived from the Su-7, in which the designers replaced the fixed wing with a variable-geometry wing on the outer panels. The Su-17M3 and Su-17M4 versions formed the late and the most capable part of the family, with extended equipment for navigation and for attacks on ground targets. The aircraft carried blocks of dispensers for chaff and infrared flares, which protected them against guided missiles while flying over the battlefield. The type served with the Soviet Air Force and with a number of export operators, and in the export versions it was known under the designations Su-20 and Su-22.

Fitting and painting tips

First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, so that the remains of the mold release agent are removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw or a cutting disc and level the surface on abrasive paper; when sanding resin, work wet and protect your airways. The parts are glued with super glue, which can be slowed locally with a small amount of filler. Apply a primer before painting, because otherwise resin holds paint less well; the fine edges of the tubes can then be pulled out with a dark wash.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who refine the details of Soviet ground-attack aircraft
  • Builders of Su-17 models in 1:48 scale
  • Anyone interested in competition building, where the quality of the detail decides
  • Those who already have experience of working with resin

This is an accessory set, not a complete model. It is supplied unpainted and unassembled; the paints, the glue and the base kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a resin accessory set meant to improve a plastic kit that has already been bought. The aircraft itself is not in the package.

Super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Ordinary cement for polystyrene does not work on resin.

Yes, it is advisable. Resin is smooth, and without a primer paint holds badly on it and rubs off easily.

It calls for a steady hand when cutting the casting blocks off and sanding. If you have not worked with resin before, count on a slower pace.
