1:48 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV Civilian Schemes is an injection-molded plastic kit of the British fighter with the Griffon engine in postwar civil colors from the maker Airfix.

The kit captures the Spitfire Mk.XIV, that is, the version with the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, in a boxing devoted to civil color schemes. It is therefore not a typical military boxing but machines in the form they were given after withdrawal from military service: racing specials, flying displays and private warbirds. Airfix is a British brand and the Spitfire is among its flagship subjects, and the 1:48 scale offers a pleasant ratio of size and detail with this type.
The Spitfire Mk.XIV was a fundamental step in the development of the type. The original Merlin engine was replaced by the bulkier and more powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon, which called for lengthening and reshaping the nose, a markedly larger fin and a five-blade propeller. The direction of rotation of the propeller changed too, so the pilot had to correct to the opposite side on takeoff than with the earlier versions. A number of machines were given a cut-down rear fuselage with a teardrop canopy, which dramatically improved the view to the rear. After the war the withdrawn Spitfires passed into civil hands and in colorful, often entirely non-military schemes they could be seen at air days and in races.
Finish the cockpit and paint it before closing the fuselage. Dry-fit the wing and the radiators first, so that the correct dihedral and the seating surfaces come out right. The large fin and the five-blade propeller are the recognition marks of the Mk.XIV, so give attention to the angles of the blades. Civil schemes are usually glossy and single-colored, or on the contrary markedly contrasting, which places demands on the surface: apply a filler primer, sand finely and spray the paint in thin coats. Apply the decals onto a gloss varnish and use a softener so that the film settles into the engraved lines. The weathering should be minimal; warbirds are usually kept in perfect condition.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
