Omask 1:48 Ta 152 H-1 - a masking set

A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the Focke-Wulf Ta 152 H-1 fighter in 1:48 scale. The set is tied to one particular machine identified by its works number and to its later captured appearance, that is to the state in which the aircraft passed into the hands of the other side after the end of the war and was tested. It is not a kit and it is not decals — the masks serve to spray the markings directly on the model.

The real subject

The Ta 152 H is the high-altitude variant derived from the design line of the Fw 190 D. Its identifying feature is the markedly greater span of the slender wing and the lengthened fuselage. For a modeler it matters that the wing surfaces are large and at the same time narrow — sprayed markings look far better on them than a decal, whose edge is easily noticed on so slender a surface.

Procedure and tips

• Let the base color cure completely before masking and degrease the surface.
• Lay the mask on with tweezers and press the edges down, on long straight surfaces gradually along the whole length.
• Spray several thin coats; paint will creep under a heavy coat.
• Take the mask off shortly after the paint has set, not after it has cured completely.
• Captured machines tended to be remarked — watch the order of the layers, so that both the original and the added markings sit correctly.
