1:48 TA-4J Skyhawk canopy mask Hasegawa/Hobby 2000 is a set of stencils for the frames of the lengthened canopy of the two-seat training Skyhawk.
Responsibility details are not available.
The training version has substantially longer glazing above the fuselage than the single-seat Skyhawks and its framing is more broken up. The stencils are cut out to this shape in forty-eighth scale, so the most unpleasant part of the handwork falls away: keeping the frame the same width along a long curve, where every hesitation with the tape shows up as a visible narrowing. The model to whose parts the set is cut is named in the name of the item.
The TA-4J came about by lengthening the fuselage of the single-seat Skyhawk by a second seat placed behind the pilot, while part of the combat equipment that training did not need was taken out of the machine. The US Navy schooled its pilots on it in advanced jet training for many years, and the machines later found a use in the adversary role in air combat practice as well, where they carried conspicuous, often colorful finishes. That role is precisely what makes it a rewarding modeling subject, because it offers color schemes that are not seen on combat machines.
A long curve calls for patience in seating. Lay the stencil on at a single point in the middle first, line it up along the frame and only then press it down to both sides, so that it does not ripple anywhere. Before the camouflage itself, lay a thin coat in the interior shade onto the masked glass, which seals any gaps at the edge, and let it cure. Leave taking the stencils off until all the coats of paint are finished.
