A Japanese aircraft machine gun designated Te-4 in 1:48 scale. A finely executed part for the rear cabin of an army aircraft, where a kit offers only a coarse blank.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Imperial Japanese Army Air Force carried its flexible onboard machine guns under the abbreviated Te series. These were weapons of a caliber of around 7.7 mm intended for the rear space of two-seat machines, where the observer worked them with his own hands against the stream of air rushing past behind the pilot's cabin. The design therefore differed from fixed machine guns built into a wing or a fuselage: it had to be light, quick to load and balanced so that one man could keep it aimed even during a maneuver of the whole aircraft. It was precisely this group of weapons that made up the defensive armament of Japanese reconnaissance and light bombing types before the war and in its first years.
A machine gun tends to be shaped as a compromise in a molding, so that the mold will release it at all. The muzzle is blind, the cooling holes indistinct and the frame of the sight runs together with the body of the weapon. A separately produced part does not have this compromise, and in an open rear cabin, which modelers often build with the cover pushed back, that difference is visible at once.
Work with the part using tweezers and cut it off with a sharp blade, not with pliers. The remains of the mold release agent are removed by a lukewarm bath with detergent, after which let the piece dry thoroughly. A dark base and a hint of graphite on the edges will bring the weapon to life well without making a mirror of it.
