A supplementary set in photo-etched metal for the engine deck of the German heavy tank Tiger I in its early production form. The set is cut for a particular kit, the Skybow one, and serves to replace the grilles over the radiators and the fans. It is not a model of the vehicle but an aftermarket accessory to an already purchased kit.
Cooling grilles are the most conspicuous weakness of the whole upper surface on models of armored vehicles. In reality they are a mesh with open holes and a protective grating above it; an injection mold, however, cannot make such a part, so on a kit there tends to be only a suggested structure on a solid surface. The result reads like a sticker. Photo-etched metal has holes that really are open, so depth and shadow arise beneath the grille. The engine deck is moreover a surface that is looked at from above in a cabinet, that is exactly where the difference shows most.
The original plastic imitation of the grille usually has to be cut out or sanded away so that the new part seats flat; proceed slowly and keep trying the part dry. Under a see-through grille you can see inside, which is why you should paint the inside of the opening matte black or insert a thin plate beneath it; otherwise white plastic shows through and the effect is lost. Cut the photo-etched parts out with a scalpel, level the edges with a file and degrease the metal with alcohol. Glue with cyanoacrylate in minute drops around the perimeter, as an excess of glue will run into the holes and seal the grille, which is the most frequent mistake. A primer is necessary. Dust and fallen leaves then settle nicely in the grilles, so a fine pigment at the end does a great service.
