The set belongs among the small accessories for military models and dioramas. It is not a model of a gun or a vehicle — these are separate parts of 105 mm ammunition in 1:48 scale, which come into their own at an artillery position, in an ammunition depot or in the ammunition compartment of a self-propelled carrier. The set replaces the coarsely shaped parts from plastic kits and adds detail to a scene that ordinary molds tend to simplify.
The American 105 mm M2A1 howitzer on the M2A2 carriage was the standard divisional gun of the US Army in the Second World War, and under its later designation M101 it served for decades after the war as well. The same caliber was also used in self-propelled form on half-track and tracked chassis, and in the version of the Sherman armed with a howitzer instead of a gun. The ammunition was semi-fixed: the cartridge case was seated on the shell, but the crew could remove part of the propellant charge from it and so adjust the trajectory of the shell. The rounds were carried in containers and boxes, so around the crew there arises the typical mixture of boxes, containers and discarded cases — and it is exactly this that makes a scene believable.
First clean the parts of the remains of the casting blocks and level the mating surfaces with fine abrasive paper. Before painting it pays to wash them in lukewarm soapy water and to lay down a base color from a spray can or an airbrush — without a base the coat rubs off easily on a smooth surface. The cases look best when a thin brown wash is applied over a brass shade and the edges are lightly polished. With the shells it helps to set the body of the shell apart in color from the driving band. The most reliable way to glue them is with cyanoacrylate glue, because ordinary plastic cement need not hold on these parts.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
